If NY politicians are so sure that the majority of New Yorkers support 'gay marriage' why not let them vote?

Are they scared to let people vote on it because even the majority of Californians can figure out that guys playing house and dress up isn't a real marriage, but rather a sickness and giving it a status only enables it? Is that why in New York, politicians are just legislating away instead of letting the citizens have a say in it?
